This lecture is offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at SDSU for individuals 50 years of age and better. The registration deadline is Nov. 10.

Course information: What role do museums play in stewarding Native American culture? In 1990, the U.S. government passed the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and it forever changed the way museums handle Native American human remains and cultural items. Interpretation and practice of the law by both tribes and museums have resulted in clashes and successes between the two. Learn about this interesting law and hear real-case scenarios of NAGPRA in practice to gain an appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work occurring at museums in the U.S. today. The class will also discuss the future of museums and Native American collections.
