The Yale Russian Chorus Alumni Association returns to St. Mary's Church at Hamilton Village. For 71 years, the Chorus has delighted audiences worldwide with its eclectic and engaging mix of music from Russian, Ukraine and other Slavic nations. The YRC has toured Eastern Europe 19 times over the decades. In 1958, they were among the very first American music groups to pass through the Iron Curtain and serenade an utterly astonished Russian audience. The deep and rich bonds that the YRC has formed with the people of Russia, Ukraine , Georgia and other nations has endured and deepened in times of peace and times of turmoil.
The concert on Saturday will represent a blend of Russian and Ukrainian folk songs. Their tone and timbre are equal parts boisterous and jocular, and somber, brooding and mournful. They often represent the most primal attachment to the land. They deal with the eternal themes of love and loss. The Chorus invites you to enter this rich and engaging world of sound. Welcome!
