Paths Converge | Sunday, May 16, 2021, 4-6pm

Two Haydn quartets bookend a trio of compact but powerfully adventurous works from the 20th and 21st centuries in the Hausmann Quartet’s long-awaited return to live, in person performance. This concert will be held on the outdoor deck of the Berkeley, and features works by Silvestre Revueltas (the father of Mexican musical modernism), Alexandra Vrebalov (My Desert, My Rose from 2015) and Kerwin Young’s brief but evocative Peace on the Left, Justice on the Right, written in response to the murder of George Floyd. Audience members will once again be able to enjoy the idyllic sights and sounds of San Diego’s harbor as they experience live music.

Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime

The Hausmann Quartet and Maritime Museum of San Diego are excited to partner to present the sixth season of Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime, a quarterly concert series performed aboard one of the Museum’s ten historic world-class vessels, the 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay. Concerts aboard the Berkeley, also a National Historic Landmark docked in downtown San Diego next to Star of India, explore the evolution of the string quartet through the lens of Joseph Haydn's quartet cycle. Part of the vision for the Haydn Voyages series is for the Hausmann Quartet to perform the entire Haydn cycle of 68 works. Their scorecard at the start of the 2021 season stands at 31 quartets, or 46%. Having adapted to the conditions of the current pandemic in typically innovative style, the Hausmann Quartet presented their latest three concerts as dazzling online video offerings from aboard the Berkeley. The 2021 season will open with a virtual presentation on February 28 (available for viewing through March 7), with the hope of resuming in person presentations on May 16, September 12 and November 21. All concerts are Sundays at 4 pm. For each in person performance refreshments will be available at the upper deck bar starting at 3 pm, as well as after each concert for a chance to mingle with performers and audience members! Each creative program will also include informative and entertaining commentary between selections from noted UC Santa Barbara musicologist Derek Katz.
