Discoveries: Found Magical Occurrences - Solo Exhibition by Dan Baumbach

Dan Baumbach’s muse is the natural world. Dan spends his creative time wandering in places that are less frequented by most photographers. His camera is his eye looking at little details:  water, leaves, grasses, ice, clouds. His focus quiets him to give him time to notice things that people walk past.

His most cherished moments are when something grabs his attention and a discovery occurs. He stops in his tracks as a little confluence of leaves, water, ice or other elements tell him their story. At that moment, Dan sets up his camera and tripod to begin his creative exploration.

The second part of his creative process beings at home in front of his computer where Dan reviews his raw files and new discoveries occur. A few of his many images will speak to him and he develops that “Discovery” into a print for exhibition.

Baumbach has been taking photographs for most of his life, beginning in his twenties working in New York City in advertising and fashion photography. After moving to California, he became involved in large format landscape photography around the Marin County Watershed and Yosemite National Park. In Colorado he mainly focuses on photographs of grasses, leaves, clouds and water. His work is on display in the Boulder Community Hospital, The Ritz Carleton in Beaver Creek, The Sheraton Hotel in Avon, Price Waterhouse, UCSF Medical Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital.  He has participated in the Boulder Open Studios for the past nine years. Menagerie III: l’Assemblage – Solo Exhibition by Lori Dresner

The solo exhibition by Lori Dresner, “Menagerie III : l’Assemblage”, brings together a collection of saucy characters embedded in sculptural ceramic vessels and wall art. Like cave paintings from hundreds of years ago, roughly sketched figures and creatures tell stories that play with what is whimsical and what is real.

The ceramic work is created with simple line drawings etched into the surface of smooth white porcelain using a technique called Mishima or inlaid slip. As the characters emerge, so do the stories and the backgrounds. Lori then adds color with under glazes and finishes with transparent glaze.

In the past many of her porcelain vessels were three sided, however, the triangular surface that predominated in her work over the years is giving way towards other shapes and forms; an evolving canvas for illustrations that are always changing.

Lori Dresner received a BFA Degree in Ceramics from The Rhode Island School of Design, a MA Degree in Ceramics from the University of Michigan, and a MFA Degree in Video Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. Her ceramics are on display at Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit and Morgan Stanley, Denver. She works in her studio, located in the Art District of Santa Fe, and manages to spend time in the mountains of Colorado where she enjoys skiing, hiking and communing with nature.

Gallery Hours: Thursday Noon - 5pm, Friday Noon - 7 pm, Saturday Noon - 5 pm, Sunday 1 pm – 4 pm.
