GSU ensemble in residence Bent Frequency will bring Pulitzer-Prize winning composer, performer, and sound artist Du Yun to campus for a four-day residency in early 2019 for a Chinese New Year celebration. This residency is sponsored by the GSU College of the Arts (COTA), School of Music, and Confucius Institute. Du Yun has been hailed by The New York Times as "a leading figure in China’s new generation of composers” and “an indie pop diva with an avant-garde edge.”
This will be the fourth time in recent years that GSU has hosted a Pulitzer-Prize winning composer on campus. During her residency, Du Yun and Bent Frequency will present a culminating Chinese New (Y)Ear concert featuring Du Yun as composer and performer in Kopleff Recital Hall on February 7, 2019. In addition, Du Yun will present a masterclass for the composition students, a creative project workshop with the Creative Music Ensemble, and will coach student chamber ensembles in an open rehearsal/workshop environment. Du Yun will give an public lecture on her artistic work for both the COTA and Atlanta communities and will give a Global Presentation Series lecture in collaboration with the Confucius Institute and the Office of International Initiatives for the campus-wide and Atlanta communities. Since her work blurs the lines between composition, sound art, and performance art, her presentation on her artistic work and Chinese heritage will be geared not just to music students, but students of all disciplines within COTA and the university. All events will be free and open to the public.
