The King of the Beat, Legendary Bernard Purdie, along with the Jim Kohler Blues Band, will present a festive family day of music and camaraderie with the "World's Best Drummer." This event will begin with a Children's Drumming Workshop from 4:00 to 5:00 at the theater for all ages, free of charge. Everyone's favorite follows with a Meet and Greet from 5:30 to 6:30 at the New Village Brewery across from the theater and a two-hour show starting at 7:00 PM. Bring the family to all three.
Bernard Purdie is an American groove drummer and an influential R and B soul and funk musician. He is known for his precise musical timekeeping and his signature use of triplets against a half time backbeat, called the "Purdie Shuffle." Bernard Purdie has enjoyed a long history playing with some of the greatest performers of all time. Purdie is credited as drummer on James Brown's album Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1969). He worked as Aretha Franklin's musical director for five years and his signature track was on her album Rock Steady. Purdie was ghost drummer for the Beatles and was credited on the soundtrack of the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978). In 2009 Purdie was the drummer for the Broadway revival of Hair. His drumming has been credited on album covers for Ray Charles, King Curtis, Hall and Oates, Peter Frampton, Steely Dan, Cat Stevens, Bob Marley and more. Bernard Purdie was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013. He has the distinction of being one of the most recorded session drummers in music history.
Check ticket availability at the Box Office one hour before the Meet and Greet. Complimentary tickets need to be exchanged for regular tickets at Nautical Wheelers to ensure seating in the case of a sold-out show. Doors open 30 minutes before the show begins.
