Valjean befriends Fantine played by sophomore Sophia Nelson (Spring Lake), an ailing, peasant mother who he promises to adopt and take care of her daughter Cosette played by junior, Emma Ballinger (South Plainfield) after she is gone. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising led by Enjolras played by sophomore Sami Ravi (Howell) and saves the life of Marius played by junior, Daniel Arce (East Brunswick) a young man hopelessly in love with Cosette does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed.
