The CNY Fiber Arts Festival returns to Bouckville on June 10th and 11th with all its popular features and some new attractions. The family-friendly festival will be held at Bouckville's Butternut Hill Campground on Route 20 from 10 am to 4 pm each day. Visitors can stroll through 112 booths under cover offering fiber-related products, farm products, fiber animals, exhibits, and demonstrations. The products include handspun yarn, roving, and handmade clothing; unique decorative pieces; rugs and sheepskins; crocheted and knitted toys. Other booths offer supplies for the fiber arts, handmade tools, jewelry, totes, soap, fabrics, brooms, honey, herbs, and maple syrup. The yarn and fiber products come from a variety of sheep and goat breeds, Angora rabbits, llamas, and alpacas. Many of the fiber animals will be at the festival to greet visitors, and fleeces will be available for purchase in the fleece sale tent.
The festival is a perfect place for experienced fiber artists to stock up on unique raw materials and for novice artists to learn and be inspired by the talented fiber artists represented. The Viv Fulton Memorial Weaving competition will be featured again this year, and items submitted to the competition will be on display. Vendors and fiber guild members will demonstrate spinning, weaving, felting, and knitting. Jim Baldwin of Foxfire Farms will demonstrate sheep shearing. Visitors will be invited to add to a community weaving project on a "story loom". Live music and food vendors will round out the festival atmosphere, and the open-air environment will allow everyone to enjoy rural CNY and feel safe. Masks and hand sanitizer will be available.
CNY Fiber Artists and Producers is especially pleased to be offering a slate of workshops and lectures of interest to beginning and experienced fiber artists and handcrafters. On Saturday, Marcia Weinert will offer a morning workshop for beginning spinners and an afternoon class on making felted bowls. The Sunday workshops will provide introductions to crochet and to spinning with a drop spindle. Details on the classes and the procedure for registration are available on the cnyfiberarts.org website. Advanced reservations are strongly recommended.
Free lectures will be offered by Rabbit Goody, Ken Wolf, Mary Jeanne Packer, and Alison Altafi. Ken Wolf, a fleece judge for the NYS Fair, will speak about raising a handspinner's flock. Rabbit Goody will speak about weaving in rural CNY from 1780 - 1870, and Mary Jeanne Packer, from Battenkill Fibers, will advise attendees on choosing the best fiber for a project.
In the popular Children's Tent , visitors may weave potholders, try needle-felting, decorate a mask, and pet baby goats. Adventurous youngsters can accept the "Explorer Pass" challenge that will send them to stations throughout the festival for answers to fiber questions.
More information can be found on the website https://www.cnyfiberarts.org. The festival charges $6 admission; children under 12 are free. For the safety of the animals on display, dogs are not permitted.
The 2023 CNY Fiber Arts Festival is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.
CNY Fiber Artists and Producers also gratefully acknowledges the support of Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancement. Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancement supports programs, projects, and events that are intended to strengthen agriculture, commercial fishing, and the forest products sector in the Northeast. This program is a combined effort of Farm Credit East, Yankee Farm Credit, and CoBank.
