Open Source Gallery presents hold please, an interactive installation by Soyoung Shin and Anthony Bodlović.

In difficult times we need to hold on to things that serve us, and to let go of things that don’t. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference. hold please offers participants both options.

Soyoung and Anthony have felt stretched to their limits. Juggling their personal lives, the global pandemic, and the persistent stream of devastating news stories has felt exhausting and sometimes impossible. As the artist duo re-emerged this summer to re-engage in the artmaking process it became clear that this has been a year with few easy answers. They found themselves moving through the motions, holding on to each other for support, and letting go of expectations. They listened to each other tell stories from their past, shared current preoccupations, and fantasized about future dreams. The artworks that emerged are artifacts of a friendship, of holding space for each other. The artists would like to offer this kindness to you.

Shin and Bodlović have crafted interactive sculptures of their hands, by their hands. The sculptures are imbued with the artists’ memories – memories that serve as lessons, cautionary tales, and opportunities for connection. As visitors are greeted by a legend of personal moments, they are invited to reflect on moments of their own lives and to participate in a ritual of holding on and letting go.

Let us create a matrix of support.
Let us place the power back into our own hands.
Let us create community and hold space together.

Soyoung Shin and Anthony Bodlović are artists residing in Los Angeles who spend their days researching human interactions through their lenses of art therapy, spirituality, engineering, fashion design, and education. Their collaborative performances are often fueled by their magical thinking and their shared experiences of being raised by immigrants. Searching for meaning in bouncy castles and reality TV,  the two investigate human experiences through parody and play, recreating an alternative version of Americana and their Mother’s Land to understand where we came from, and where we are going.

This program is supported, in part, by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, the Joseph Robert Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
