LIVING IN COLOR: THE ALCHEMY IN ABSTRACT PAINTINGS by Ivy Stevens-Gupta
International award-winning artist and certified color therapist, Ivy Stevens-Gupta will have her colorful paintings and sculptural art on display at Twig and Hollow Gallery located at 65 Shethar Street, Hammondsport, New York, July 1–August 15, 2022. An opening reception with light refreshment is scheduled for Saturday, July 9th from 6:30-9pm. Craft beer samples from Brewery of Broken Dreams will be available. Free and open to the public.
Native to the Finger Lakes, Stevens-Gupta's love for nature manifests in environmental sustainability-themed seascapes and landscapes. A full-time artist, color theory lecturer, art instructor and magazine columnist, Stevens-Gupta attended Alfred University for art and received her graduate degree at SUNY Empire State College. She is a former advertising manager for Gannett Newspaper Division and Director for corporate relations at Cornell University.
Many of Stevens-Gupta paintings focus on the chemistry behind color. She mixes acrylics and oils carefully with inks and polymers on stretched canvas and birch board to create unique color combinations involving several layers of paint, epoxy resin, and a blowtorch to seal the paint beneath the resin.
In a nod to Kandinsky and a wink to Arthur Brouthers, her large 4' x 5' abstract "Rainbow Fish" features glittering fish that maneuver and undulate against the reactive forces of ocean waves. "Northern Lights," is a 4' x 2' painting that depicts the Aurora Borealis colliding with water and artic ice. Her 4' x 4' "Gender Blender," inspired by Gustav Klimt, fuses blue and pink concentric circles, glitter and silver leaf to capture the cultural connotations of color.
During the pandemic, Stevens-Gupta spent several months perfecting a fabric created from acrylic paint and polymers that she sculpts into fashion designs on cradled birch board panels. The resulting three-dimensional effect is both a painting and a sculpture. Her series of billowy and voluminous sculptural pieces is reminiscent of ball gowns worn through history. In "Bridezilla," color-shifting and pearlescent paints depict antique wedding gowns.
Stevens-Gupta's colorful paintings have appeared in several books on international contemporary artists and her work has recently been exhibited in Rome, Hong Kong and Germany. But it is her work helping others creatively express themselves that really brings her joy. Stevens-Gupta has used color as a form of therapy while painting to help herself transform and process grief, stress and anxiety, and this experience has anchored her work as a color therapist. Some of the many organizations Stevens-Gupta has taught color and art are Cornell University, MIT Sloan Alumni, Aravind Eye Hospitals in India, SUNY Cortland, and SUNY Alfred.
