Paleolithic Cave Painting and the Emergence of Consciousness in the Two Million Year Old Man

5 consecutive Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30 pm, beginning October 6, 2020

An online course using Zoom platform.

We will review the background to the emergence of human consciousness and the artistic behavior of humans in Paleolithic Europe. Definitions of consciousness, symbol and art will be established followed by a brief review of human evolution and migration out of Africa along with the conditions in Europe 40,000 years ago which fostered the remarkable variety of artistic expression.  We will view examples of Portable and Parietal art with an emphasis on the caves of Altamira, Les Cavernes du Volp, Lascaux and Chauvet as well as examples from many other caves.
