The Rides: The Pioneer Century, well-known in the greater Portland cycling community, is open to everyone who enjoys bicycle riding. There are three different route lengths to accommodate riders of all levels, and everyone is welcome to participate at their own pace on Saturday, June 3. The course opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m.

Ride Support: Along the century route, there are three rest stops; the metric century has two rest stops; and there is one rest stop for the half-metric century. Each rest stop will be generously supplied with healthy, energy-enhancing food. Support and gear vehicles, popularly referred to as SAG, will monitor the routes, and there will be mechanical support for your bike. A request has been made for beautiful weather!

Ride History: The Pioneer Century rides have a 50-year heritage with the Portland Bicycling Club (formerly known as the Portland Wheelmen Touring Club). The “Pioneer” part of the ride name reflects the history of the Champoeg, Canby, and Molalla areas. Rich farmland and timber brought pioneers to this area, and this same beauty draws cyclists today. The Pioneer Century rides offer three great routes, whether you seek a social ride or personal best. The “Century” part of the name stands for the 100 miles of the longest route option (actually 103 miles). There is also a metric century (100 kilometers or 63 miles). The third option is a half-metric century (33 miles). Each route starts and ends at Columbia Distributing in Canby, right in Portland's backyard. More details about the rides, including maps, can be found on the Portland Bicycling Club (PBC) website at https://PortlandBicyclingClub.com/pioneer/. The net proceeds from the ride help PBC give back to the cycling community.

Charitable Contributions: As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, PBC donates a large portion of its yearly revenue to support cycling generally, safe cycling and programs for youth. Revenue from 2022 made donations of $12,000 possible. Earlier this year, donations went to the Banks-Vernonia Trail (for repairs), Community Cycling Center, Bikes for Humanity PDX, Bike Farm, The Street Trust, Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway, and Bike Index.

Our Club: The primary focus of PBC is recreational riding, with club rides offered every day of the year and some evenings. Riders of all abilities are welcome. See our ride calendar at https://PortlandBicyclingClub.com/scheduled_rides/. Membership is $35 for one year or $60 for two years, and family memberships are available too. To join, go to https://PortlandBicyclingClub.com/home/join-renew/. Daily club rides are free and unlimited; in other words, you can ride as many as you want to. The Pioneer rides cost $55, same great price no matter which route you choose; however, if you join the club as a member before you register for the Pioneer event, you will enjoy all the benefits of club membership AND get a $5 discount. It's a win-win! It's possible to sign up for the Pioneer rides as late as the day of the ride; however, the price will increase May 28 through June 3, so be sure to register early.
