"Can't sing. Can't act. Balding. Can dance a little."
-- notes from Fred Astaire's 1933 screen test at RKO Radio Pictures
While Fred Astaire (1899-1987) was best known for his legendary, innovative dancing, and, in particular his dancing with Ginger Rogers, his co-star in a series of 9 film musicals released by RKO Radio Pictures between 1933 and 1939, his skills and career reach well beyond on both fronts. The famous line from his long lost RKO screen test is probably apocryphal: At the time of that audition he was, like so many Broadway stars, seeking a new career in a burgeoning industry promising prosperity at the height of the Depression; and was doing so with a resume stronger than most -- star turns with his sister Adele in more than a dozen Broadway and West End musicals, and before that at least a decade on the vaudeville circuit. Of course he could dance. Of course he could act. And he could most certainly sing.Jesse Cloninger and company offer a delectable selection of Astaire's film musical legacy, from his first turn with Rogers in RKO's 1933 Flying Down To Rio to Warner Bros. 1968 film adaptation of Yip Harburg and Burton Lane's impish musical fantasy Finian's Rainbow.
