Salem Symphonic Winds will return to Youngberg Hill in McMinnville for the performance of Queen's Gambit at 6 pm on Sunday, August 21. John Skelton will direct the band through various light music selections in celebration of the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and all things British.

Jeff Witt will join the band as the featured vocalist. Jeff teaches choir and theatre at Central High School in Independence and is a veteran actor, often gracing the stage at the Pentacle Theatre in Salem. He will sing A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, Feeling Good, Anthem from Chess, and more.

Joan Paddock, Professor of Music at Linfield University and internationally renowned trumpet and Lur soloist, will be featured as a cornet soloist on the theme and variations on The British Grenadiers. This traditional British marching song dates back to the 17th century.

The program will feature The Platinum Jubilee March by Chris Shelton, written to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's seventy-year reign as monarch of the United Kingdom. Its premiere was televised worldwide as part of the Queen's Birthday Parade, which marked the start of the national Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The march was performed by the First Battalion of the Irish Guards trooping their colors in the Queen's Birthday Parade. Colonel Bogey, another popular British march made famous in the film The Bridge on the River Kwai, will also be included in the program.

What Americans think of as Broadway musicals appear in theatres on the "West End" in London. The concert will include medleys from the musicals Oliver and My Fair Lady and selections from Chess, The Producers, Avenue Q, Spamalot, Wicked, and The Lion King. Handel in the Strand by Percy Grainger will add a historical note that reflects both English musical comedy and George Frideric Handel [the "Strand" – a street in London – is the home of London musical comedy] – as if jovial old Handel were strolling down the strand to the strains of modern English popular music.

One of the most famous street crossings in the world is just outside the recording studio made famous by the Beatles, Abbey Road. The band will perform Abbey Road: A Symphonic Portrait which includes the Beatles' tunes You Never Gave Me Your Money, Come Together, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, Something, and The End.

British films will be represented with James Bond 007 in our celebration of the 60th anniversary of James Bond in theatres. This medley arranged by Johan de Meij includes All Time High from Octopussy, the James Bond Theme from Dr. No, For Your Eyes Only, and Goldfinger.

This concert is made possible, in part, by funding from Youngberg Hill, Sue Perry of Firenze Wealth Management, Roth's Fresh Catering, and RDE2 Live Sound. Proceeds from the concert support production expenses for the band's concert season.

Gourmet sandwich meals can be pre-ordered for $17.50 if purchased by Wednesday, August 17. Meals will be available at 5:30 pm. Audience members can also bring their own picnic for the show. A selection of Youngberg Hill wine will be available as well as beer and soft drinks for purchase. No outside beverages, please. Chairs are available, or the audience can bring low lawn seating or blankets.
