Discover the ancient roots, rituals, and meanings of Día de los Muertos, when the veil separating the world of the living and dead is thin. Join Dr. Javier Urcid, Brandeis University, on October 22, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Brown Auditorium for this engaging talk. The days surrounding Día de los Muertos transcend worlds: the worlds of the living and the dead, the worlds of Europe and Latin America, the worlds of today and yesterday. Día de los Muertos is a loving, glorious celebration of life and death. Día de los Muertos originated among the ancient Mesoamerican peoples, who emphasized honoring their ancestors. Today’s commemoration blends indigenous celebrations with teachings of Catholicism. Discover the rituals and the multifold meanings of a tradition when the veil separating worlds is thin, when perhaps it is possible to symbolically commune with loved ones on the night that their souls return for a visit.
