First Hummel Lake Bass Derby, Lopez Island,June 22

The island-based conservation laboratory Kwiaht, the Lopez Island Youth Conservation Corps, and community volunteers have begun clearing away weedy blackberry, Scotch broom and holly for a better view and lots more access to the Hummel Lake shoreline for birding, frogging, and casting. Let's celebrate by fishing!

Largemouth bass and bluegills were introduced in Hummel Lake more than a half-century ago as part of a state program aimed at sport fishing for non-native "warm water" species. Catfish were tried, too; but the bass and bluegills quickly adapted to the shallow, muddy, densely vegetated habitat at Hummel and have thrived ever since. Yes, they are "invasive". They are also great fishing and very, very tasty... like the lake's bullfrogs.

Prizes will be awarded at 4:00 pm on the day of the derby. Weigh-in will be at the registration table, any time before 3:30 pm. You can keep up to five bass; all will need to be measured and logged. Here's what you need to participate!

1. Register to compete in this contest. A registration table will be open in the parking area at the corner of Center Road and Hummel Lake Road beginning at 8:00 am on the day of the derby. Registration is $25 for adults and $5 for young anglers under 16 years of age,

2. If you are 16 years of age or older, you will need a current Washington state freshwater fishing license Younger anglers do not need a fishing license.

3. If you bring a boat from off-island (hand-powered craft such as kayaks and canoes only, please), clean it thoroughly before launching at Hummel Lake. Boats will be inspected for invasive aquatics as required by state law, and you will need to sign some state paperwork acknowledging these requirements.
