Don't miss MAMCCO's free presentation of three famous works by three well-known composers. We will be playing The Great Organ Mass #5 in E flat by Franz Joseph Hayden, Sure On This Shining Night by Morten Lauridsen, and Symphony in A by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Franz Joseph Haydn's (1732-1809) was a prolific Austrian composer who spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterhazy family. During his lifetime, he was the most celebrated composer in Europe. The chorus and orchestra will present his Mass in E-flat (H. 22/4), written in 1770 in honor of the Blessed Virgin. It is known as the "Grosse Orgelmesse" because of its prominent organ solo part, which will be played by Dr. James Norden, the group's accompanist. Like most of Haydn's works, it is tuneful and cheerful, ending on a note of profound hope.

Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943) is a National Medal of Arts recipient (2007), composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (1994-2001) and has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than 40 years. This American Choral Master created a magnificent setting of William Agee's poem, "Sure on this Shining Night" for chorus with piano accompaniment, which MAMCCO will present during the concert. The music is serene and flexible, befitting the text.

The orchestra will also play Symphony No. 29 in A major (K. 201) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Despite his short life, he worked quite rapidly, producing more than 800 works of virtually every genre of his time. This symphony is one of Mozart's best known early symphonic masterpieces, considered by British musicologist Stanley Slade as "a landmark. personal in tone, indeed perhaps more individual in its combination of an intimate, chamber music style with a still fiery and impulsive manner."

There is no admission fee, but your free-will offering will go to support the Milwaukee Rescue Mission, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to serving the homeless and less fortunate in Milwaukee by providing food, shelter, education and training.
